THE TOWN OF METHIL

Methil is the sixth largest town in Fife, having an estimated population of 11,160 in 2012.  Immediately to the south-west is Buckhaven (4,340 inhabitants in 2012) with which it was united as a burgh in 1891, while across the River Leven to the north-east is the town of Leven (2012 population - 8,960).  All three of these neighbouring towns lie on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, approximately eight miles north-east of Kirkcaldy.

These web pages reflect the special interest of former map publisher Ronald P A Smith in Methil and its past, the town having been his home community for his first 18 years. For several years, the pages were maintained on the website of his map business but are now displayed here.

The information is subdivided into the categories which can be reached by clicking on the purple-coloured buttons above. We hope that present and former residents of Methil find the contents of these pages to be of interest.

The link below takes you to the website of the Methil Heritage Centre, the town's very interesting local museum.
